Medieval Merchants House Map

Medieval Merchants House occupies a restored townhouse at 58 French Street in Southampton’s old town, just south of the High Street. Managed by English Heritage, the museum opens a window into merchant life during the late medieval period, when Southampton was a thriving port handling trade with France and the Mediterranean. The house itself, built around the 14th century, retains its original timber-framed structure and has been furnished to reflect how a prosperous merchant family would have lived and worked within its walls.

Visitors can explore the domestic quarters, kitchen, and counting house that reveal the blend of commerce and household life characteristic of Southampton’s merchant class. The building stands as one of the few surviving examples of medieval domestic architecture in the city, offering insight into urban life before the Tudor period. Entry is by paid admission. The museum is situated within easy walking distance of the Bargate, the Solent, and other heritage sites clustered in the town centre.
